( NewsNation ) — Iran’s supreme leader has warned the United States that if it attacks the Middle Eastern country, a regional war will ensue.
“Americans should know that if they start a war this time, it would be a regional war,” Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said, according to Iranian state media.
The 86-year-old issued the warning on Sunday during a meeting held on the anniversary of the start of the Ten-Day Dawn celebrations, which marked the 47th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution.
This comes after President Donald Trump sent the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and associated American warships to the Arabian Sea in response to Tehran’s deadly crackdown on nationwide protests.
“We do have very big, powerful ships heading in that direction, as you know. But I hope – I hope they negotiate something that’s acceptable,” Trump told reporters Saturday.
Trump has yet to respond to the new threats.
